8th Ave Viaduct Project Update
Project Overview
The Denver Department of Transportation & Infrastructure (DOTI) in cooperation with prime contractor Hamon Infrastructure, will begin a viaduct maintenance project on 8th Avenue between Vallejo and Mariposa Street starting in early August. The project will replace the viaduct's expansion joints and spot-repair its bridge deck to support continued use by the traveling public. Expansion joints allow a bridge to expand and contract while preventing damage to the structure. DOTI is investing approximately $1.5M in this bridge maintenance work with funding approved by voters as part of the Elevate Denver Bond.
Travel Impacts
Drivers can expect the following travel impacts:
To start the project, crews will be performing preliminary inspections on the east side of the viaduct followed by the west side. During this time, traffic will be reduced to one lane with flagging operations. The roadway will reopen to two lanes outside of working hours and pedestrian travel will remain unaffected. Preliminary inspections are anticipated to last for up to two weeks before starting construction.
After construction commences, the bridge will be reduced to one lane of through-travel with an automatic light device to control the flow of traffic. This travel configuration will be in place during working hours.
Crews will begin reconstructing sidewalk areas first, with a shuttle service on either end of the bridge assisting bicycle and pedestrian traffic across the construction zone. Outside of working hours, pedestrians will be able to utilize the sidewalk as normal.
Driving speeds will be reduced within the work zone.
Delays up to 10 minutes are anticipated. Drivers are encouraged to use alternate routes when available to minimize congestion.
Project Schedule
The project is set to begin in early August and is anticipated to be complete in March of 2025. This timeline is dependent on weather and resource availability and is subject to change.
Normal working hours will be from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.
Crews may work on weekends as needed throughout the duration of the project.
